Lost Your New York Boating Certificate? Find the Issuer Before Paying

Your replacement route depends on who issued the card. If you took an in-person NYS classroom course, order a $10 replacement at ilostmycard.com. If you finished an online New York-approved course, contact that provider with your account details. If the card came from the USCG Auxiliary or Power Squadron/America’s Boating Club, ask the sponsoring flotilla or squadron for a duplicate.
TL;DR:
- For an in person NYS classroom card, use ilostmycard.com and pay $10; online students must request duplicates from their course provider.
- For USCG Auxiliary or Power Squadron cards, contact the sponsoring unit first; no central Auxiliary database exists for nonmembers, so verify course acceptance before retaking.
- Temporary certificates last 90 days and instructors cannot reissue them; contact NYS Parks within seven days of expiry if your permanent card has not arrived.
- Gather your completion email, certificate number, course date, instructor name, and photo ID before contacting an issuer; legal name changes may require supporting papers.

How do you find out who issued your certificate?
Replacement is a records problem, and each issuer controls its own records. Sending the wrong request wastes time and, in some cases, money. NYS Parks separates the routes by issuer, so identify yours before you pay or retake anything.
Look for these clues:
- NYS classroom card: issued by an instructor after an in-person course, with the state’s boating certificate format.
- Online provider card: a completion email, account login or receipt from a company’s website.
- USCG Auxiliary or Power Squadron card: branding from the Auxiliary or America’s Boating Club, often tied to a local flotilla or squadron.
Gather your completion email, certificate number, course name, date and instructor name before you call or submit anything.
How do you replace an in-person NYS classroom certificate?
Use the NYS Parks replacement-card service for lost, mutilated or destroyed certificates. Follow these steps:
- Go to ilostmycard.com and open the replacement form.
- Enter your details exactly as they appeared when you took the course.
- Pay the processing fee. NYS Parks accepts payment by the methods the form lists.
- Wait for the card to arrive by regular mail.
- If it is overdue or your details do not match the original record, contact the Marine Services Bureau at 518-474-0445 or boating@parks.ny.gov.
The replacement processing fee is $10. NYS regulations authorize the Marine Services Bureau to send the replacement by regular mail.
If you hold a temporary certificate that is close to its 90-day expiry, email boating@parks.ny.gov right away.
What if you completed an online New York-approved course?
Do not use the classroom replacement link. NYS Parks says online students must go back to the provider that issued the card. Log into your account or search your inbox for the completion email, then request a duplicate.
Have these ready:
- Your provider account login
- The completion email
- Your certificate number
- The name you used at registration
- The approximate completion date
If the provider cannot resolve it, write to boating@parks.ny.gov for escalation. Ask whether you must retake a course before you pay for a new one.
What if the USCG Auxiliary or Power Squadron issued your card?
NYS Parks does not issue duplicates for these cards. Your best record source is the sponsoring unit, because the Coast Guard Auxiliary says it has no central national database for nonmembers.
- Contact the sponsoring flotilla, squadron or issuing organization first.
- Give them your name at the time of the course, the approximate date and the course location.
- If the unit cannot find a record, retaking an approved course is the practical fallback.
- Confirm that New York accepts the course before you pay.
What are the rules for temporary certificates?
An instructor issues one temporary certificate, and per the state’s safe boating education rules it is valid for 90 days and is not reissued. Instructors cannot replace it.

If your permanent card has not arrived and the temporary one is about to lapse, contact boating@parks.ny.gov or the Marine Services Bureau. NYS guidance asks you to reach out within seven days of the expiry date.
If the temporary card has already expired and you have no permanent card, check what proof of training is currently accepted. A retake of an approved course may be your cleanest option. Certificates are valid for life, but the card must still be carried while you operate.
How does the DMV anchor icon relate to a replacement?
The anchor icon on a NYS driver license or non-driver ID shows you completed a course. It is a convenience and backup record, and it does not replace the physical certificate. Per DMV guidance, DMV and NYS Parks keep different records.
- You can request the icon immediately for a fee, or wait until your next renewal to skip the new-document fee.
- NYS Parks cannot fix DMV photo or issuance problems. Contact the DMV for those.
- Our guide to the NYS driver license boating endorsement walks through the process.
$12.50 for driver licenses and permits, $5.00 for non-driver IDs. Those are the immediate-request fees for the anchor icon.
What documents speed up a replacement?
Name or address changes can slow a replacement because the process may require matching the original record. A name change can require legal documentation. Older records may require extra documentation.
Collect these before you contact any issuer:
- Completion email
- Certificate number
- Course name and completion date
- Instructor name
- A photo ID
- Legal name-change papers, if they apply
Pro Tip: Save a digital copy of your completion email and your certificate the day you receive them.
Quick tips from a state-approved course provider
A certificate can be misplaced in a wallet, glove box or old boat bag. The fix is simple: photograph the card the day you get it, forward the completion email to a folder you control, and keep the paper copy with your boat documents. If an issuer cannot recover a record, ask about available course options and confirm that the course is accepted in New York before enrolling. One last tip: store a digital copy and a physical copy in two different places.

FAQ
What do you do if you lose your boating license?
Identify who issued your certificate first. NYS classroom cards are replaced through ilostmycard.com, online cards through the provider, and USCG Auxiliary or Power Squadron cards through the sponsoring unit. The classroom replacement fee is $10.
Is a New York boating certificate valid for life?
Yes, the safe boating certificate is valid for life, but you must still carry it while operating a boat. A lost card means you should replace it, not retake training you already passed.
Is there a minimum age for the New York boating course?
The youngest age to take the course is 10. Younger children cannot earn the certificate through the NYS course.
Does a boat registration replace my safety certificate?
No. Vessel registration and the operator certificate are separate records. The NY DMV handles boat registration, while NYS Parks governs the safety certificate.
