How to Get Your New York State Boating Safety Certificate (And Why You Should)

Whether you’re cruising the Long Island Sound, fishing on a quiet upstate lake, or enjoying a summer day on the Hudson, boating in New York comes with one important responsibility: being properly certified (aka licensed). New York State now requires boaters operating a powered vessel to carry a boating safety certificate—often referred to as a “boating license.”

If you’re new to boating or just haven’t gotten around to it yet, here’s everything you need to know about getting your NYS boating license and why it’s one of the smartest moves you can make.

What is a Boating License?

In New York State, there's actually no such thing as a "license" to use a recreational boat. It's legally referred to as a Boating Safety Certificate. However, it has been incorrectly called a license because we are accustomed to a Drivers License which is required to operate a motor vehicle. But, a Certificate has one advantage: an automobile Drivers License is renewable for a fee every few years as required by law. A Certificate to operate a powered vessel in NYS is good for life, not renewable and only requires a one-time fee when issued. You earn it by completing a course offered at Safe Boating America. Once you pass, the certificate never expires.

Who Needs a NYS Boating License?

New York has phased in its boating safety law (Brianna's Law) over several years, and today everyone operating a motorized vessel must have a certificate. ALL motorboat operators in New York are required to be at least 10 years old unless supervised by a Certified adults, Operate a motorboat or personal watercraft (Jet Ski, WaveRunner, etc.), Plan to operate on New York State waters

Why It’s Worth It
